HCS Banner
Dear Members and Alumni,

It's August, which means it's time to watch the fighter helicopters holding the giant red and white flag with the crescent moon and 5 stars arising fly by while we pledge that Singapore can Count on Me as we Stand Up for Singapore amidst the many flags fluttering from our homes.

To those who grew up learning these songs, you'll quickly recognise the generation I'm from. I still remember the lyrics to Munnaeru Vaalibaa to this day. It's one of my favourites. And if anyone is up for a karaoke session (no NDP songs ... I promise), perhaps you could organise one via HCS Connect, our WhatsApp group! Remember those good feelings we had when we were focused on having fun with our super smart fellow students? Channel that to HCS Connect and feel free to be random in inviting fellow alums to interesting events with no agenda other than to find out more about our people - CID officers, inventors of the Next Big Thing, Mathematicians who play FIFA and football, the next Ralph Waldo Emerson in the making ... and did you know that one of our members was actually in a Hollywood movie that grossed USD224 million? Find out who that person is. Yes, that one actually comes to our events.

I know many are still waiting to be added to HCS Connect - please be patient with us as we verify the identities of the applicants to ensure that our environment remains safe. For those who need to renew their memberships, please sign up again at harvard.sg. Unfortunately, once your membership lapses, you'll have to go through the sign up all over again. We're looking into a solution.

We have a whole host of interesting events coming up in August, September and October. Watch our FB pages and HCS Connect. And if you have suggestions for events, contact us. We're always interested in hearing from you.

PS: If you happen to own a venue (e.g., F&B locations) and would like to work with us, please contact me.

Verily yours,

Welly Tantono
HCS President

Aug 7 (Monday) - Art, Science and Buddhism: What is Left Unsaid? - Talk by Harvard Professor Eugene Wang

The Harvard Club of Singapore (HCS) invites you to a talk by Professor Eugene Wang.

Art, Science, and Buddhism: What is Left Unsaid?
By Professor Eugene Wang

Where do art, science and Buddhism converge? The question usually takes us to familiar grounds: meditation, mindfulness, consciousness, inter-subjectivity (non-self), flux etc. Is there anything flying under our radar screen that ranges beyond these familiar topoi? Force fields is definitely one of those blindspots.

The notion conveniently connects modern physics to the time-honoured Chinese concept of “force” (qi) and “field” (chang). With its currency in physics, social psychology, science fiction, and art, the term points to, among other things, an individual’s or group’s psychological environment with its evolving dynamics, varying intensities and experiential qualities. Technology-inflected modern art that treats forms as forces in an abstract domain and negative space further highlights the relevance of the concept.

Sep 7 (Thursday) - Let's Talk Money!!

Love it or hate it, price negotiations are at the core of many business transactions. Whether you are
dealing with your commercial landlord, making an investment, closing a major deal, purchasing goods or services, or seeking fair compensation for your expertise, negotiations are inevitable. And let's be honest, most of us aren't fans of the process.

But here's some great news: Negotiation isn't an elusive art, nor is it a skill that you either possess or
lack. There's a lot of science behind it, and it's not the rocket kind!

Join us for an evening of negotiation-nerding with Dr. Claudia Winkler, an alum and international negotiation expert from Negotiation Academy where she will share essential techniques and the science that will help you:

  1. Use opening offers wisely.
  2. Develop a concession strategy.
  3. Prepare the right set of numbers.
  4. Utilize and/or protect yourself from the 'anchoring effect'.
  5. Analyze your BATNA and ZOPA before entering a negotiation.
During this interactive 90-minute session, you'll have the opportunity to engage in negotiations
yourself, while we equip you with the tools you need to significantly impact your outcome! Plus, there's a prize for the best negotiation result!
